There are countless articles, studies and famous quote on the purpose of living and how purpose itself enriches your life and brings you happiness.
To psychologists, “purpose reflects a commitment to broader life goals that helps organize your day to day activities”.
Abstract in ways, purpose is a difficult quality to measure. Researchers rely on scale responses to statements such as these:
“Some people wander aimlessly through life, but I am not one of them.”
“I live life one day at a time and do not really think about the future.”
“I sometimes feel as if I have done all there is to do in life.”
Purpose seems to be a good thing to have, associated with satisfaction and happiness and better physical functioning. A longitudinal study by Dr Hill enrolled 7,100 Americans aged 20 to 75 and found that those who died in all age groups, scored significantly lower on purpose in life scales.
Simply making a contribution in some way makes one feel they are part of something beyond themselves.
How do you feel you’re giving back and what do you get involved in to give life purpose?
